Christine Kelly’s research is currently focused on wastewater-based epidemiology, especially for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. She also works in wastewater treatment, both centralized and decentralized systems, their costs, microbial communities, and effectiveness. Her efforts have been placed in analyzing and promoting evidence-based instructional practices and inclusivity in academic environments. Historically, she has developed yeast and bacterial strains through genetic engineering techniques to produce valuable enzymes and products from waste biomass feedstocks, and performed technoeconomic analyses of biofuels processes.
